Maidstone United centre-half Callum Davies has been put on the transfer list by manager Jay Saunders

Defender Callum Davies is free to leave Maidstone.

The centre-half has been placed on the transfer list by boss Jay Saunders, who is also open to a loan move.

United spent weeks negotiating Davies’ release from Gillingham midway through last season.

He finally signed an 18-month contract but lost his place and has dropped further down the pecking order following the summer signings of Kevin Lokko and Anthony Acheampong.

Davies, a League 2 title winner at Gills, has vowed to fight for a shirt but it seems his time with the National League new boys may be up.

Saunders said: “We’ve made Callum available, whether that’s a permanent transfer or on loan. We’ve brought in Kevin Lokko, who looks very good, Anthony Acheampong’s come in too and we’ve also got Jamie Coyle, so that’s three good centre-halves.

“Callum’s a good player and a good lad but the others are ahead of him. His attitude’s been good. He’s said ‘I want to try and prove you wrong’ and I like that.

“I’d much rather he said that than giving up. We worked hard to get him in but sometimes it doesn’t quite work out.

“That’s the feeling I’ve got and I don’t want to take someone all over the country to sit on the bench or in the stand, which is why I’ve told him it might be best he finds somewhere else."
