Maidstone United midfielder Sam Bone says he can generate more power with his wrong foot

Maidstone midfielder Sam Bone is a rarity in football - a player equally good with both feet.

Bone is naturally right-footed but worked hard on his left foot while coming through the youth ranks at Charlton.

It’s a great tool to have and can make a real difference in the hustle and bustle of midfield.

He also scored with his left foot in Maidstone’s 1-1 draw with Hemel Hempstead on Saturday.

The ball fell his way after Sam Corne’s shot was blocked and Bone made the connection.

“I’m not too bad on my left foot, said Bone, 26.

“When the ball’s coming like that I actually fancy it more on my left.

“I don’t know why but I generate more power.

“When I was at Charlton there was a guy called Tareiq Holmes-Dennis who was superb on his left foot.

“I used to watch him and try to develop a technique that he had and, luckily for me, it’s worked.

“When that ball came out to me my eyes lit up and luckily it went in.

“It’s funny because in different scenarios I actually prefer it on my left foot and that was one of them.

“I suppose the practice has paid off and when I’m playing midfield and have to spray it with my left foot, it’s exactly the same as my right foot, so I don’t have to think twice. It’s not a bad tool to have.”

Bone is enjoying a good run in central midfield - both his preferred position and where boss George Elokobi likes to use him.

His versatility has seen him cover in defence at times this season but he’s settled in the middle of the park.

“I can’t remember the last time I played centre-back,” said Bone.

“It was always a case of once I got those minutes in midfield and I felt sharp I’d back myself to show what I can do.

“I’m really enjoying midfield and there’s some big games coming so I’m looking forward to them too.”
