An eye infection hasn't stopped in-form Maidstone striker Jay May finding the way to goal.

May followed his double in Saturday's win over Lewes with another two goals as United won 3-1 at his old club Billericay on Monday night.

Maidstone are 12 points clear in the Ryman League Premier Division after May's efforts in Essex - but he almost didn't play.

He said: "I had an infection in my left eye which I played with on Saturday but where I was wiping my face it ended up in my right eye as well.

"It was touch and go whether I'd be able to play at Billericay but I managed to get some antibiotics, which helped.

"I'm a carpenter, so I'm used to being on-site and around dust every day, but I've never had anything like this.

"My vision was blurry at times and I had constant water coming from my eyes but I'm glad I managed to play."

Boss Jay Saunders expected May to miss the game after a call from physio Paul Smith.

Saunders said: "Smudge said he didn't think Jay would be any good for Billericay because he'd taken a whack on the leg and couldn't see from the infection.

"I didn't have any intention of starting him but he said he could play and when he's in that sort of form, you can't leave him out if he says he's OK."
