Maidstone United head of football John Still turned down Glenn Tamplin's offer to become Billericay manager

John Still turned down the chance to become Billericay manager.

Still was previously offered the job by owner Glenn Tamplin, a man he got to know well while in charge at Dagenham.

Tamplin attracted plenty of star players from higher levels to Ricay but couldn’t get the boss he wanted.

“Yes, I had the chance to go to Billericay,” said Maidstone head of football Still.

“I know Glenn really well. He came in at Dagenham for a while and tried to take over there.

“He supported it from afar but for whatever reason it didn’t work out for him there.

“I was never tempted to take the Billericay job, no, no. It was never for me. I wouldn’t have come downwards.

“Like all managers, opportunities come along and you think ‘that one’s for me’ or ‘that’s not for me’.”

Maidstone meet Billericay at the Gallagher this Saturday with the visitors still boasting a strong side despite recent departures.

Tamplin himself walked away last month while ex-Lincoln striker Matt Rhead and Craig Robson, Still’s old Dagenham defender, have also departed.

Still said: “They’ve still got some very good players.

“I know the boy Rhead and Craig Robson left but they’ve still got Ronnie Henry, my old captain at Luton, Doug Loft, another of my old players, and Jake Robinson, who was here.

“They’ve managed to keep good players and I expect nothing less than a tough game.”
