Maidstone United 2 Dunstable Town 0 match report

Two goals in four minutes by Alex Osborn and Jay May steered Maidstone into the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup at the Gallagher Stadium on Saturday.

Stones needed 71 minutes to make the breakthrough against Dunstable, 20th in the Evo Stik Southern League Premier Division. Osborn fired home with a low finish, before Jay May doubled the lead from Matt Bodkin's cross.

Before that Jay Saunders' side had dominated possession, but lacked the killer touch in front of goal.

However, Dunstable's hopes of creating an upset suffered a blow when striker Graham Mitchell was sent off eight minutes after the break, following a tangle with Stones skipper Steve Watt.

May had Stones' best chance - only to blast over the bar.

Visiting goalkeeper Paul Bastock, at 45 the oldest goalkeeper in non-league football, had to be alert, touching away one cross, and then saving low down.

Mitchell dragged a good chance wide for the Bedfordshire side and then Jamale McKenzie-Lowe missed the target.

Adam Birchall and Osborn both missed chances in the second half, while Joe Healy's effort was saved low down by Bastock.

Maidstone fans' thoughts might have been turning towards the prospect of a replay, when Osborn struck with 19 minutes left. A good run saw him cut inside into the box before shooting low into the net.

It certainly lifted the crowd, and they were cheering again four minutes later when May headed in the second from Matt Bodkin's cross.

The biggest cheer came when substitute Alex Flisher came on with 11 minutes left, while Saunders also gave Academy teenager Archie Wrigglesworth his first-team debut late on.
