Maidstone United 2 Solihull Moors 4 match report

Maidstone errors were punished in a 4-2 defeat by Solihull Moors on Saturday afternoon.

Stones led through Liam Enver-Marum before conceding three goals in 12 minutes.

Dan Sweeney pulled one back before the break but Solihull made sure with a fourth goal midway through the second half, Akwasi Asante completing a hat-trick.

Jamie Coyle had a shot blocked from Kevin Lokko’s knockdown and Ben Greenhalgh’s effort almost squirmed in under Nathan Vaughan early on.

Solihull looked lively in attack, Lee Worgan with a touch to turn Jamey Osborne’s strike wide after Dan Sweeney was robbed on halfway.

The game burst into life when Maidstone took the lead after 20 minutes, Greenhalgh with a lovely low cross to the near post and Enver-Marum stabbing home after Vaughan saved his first effort.

Greenhalgh’s fierce strike was parried as United looked to build on the opener but the match was turned on its head by three Solihull goals.

They were level on 26 minutes after Shepherd Murombedzi rode a challenge and fed Jamie Osborne whose cross was volleyed home smartly at the far post by the unmarked Omari Sterling-James.

The visitors were in front on 34 minutes, Sweeney conceding a penalty for a clumsy-looking challenge on Asante, who was facing away from goal on the edge of the box.

Asante took the spot-kick, sending Worgan the wrong way.

Sweeney then lost the ball in midfield as Solihull went 3-1 up on 38 minutes, Osborne feeding the dangerous Asante who raced through and coolly beat Worgan.

Maidstone were back in the game two minutes later - a goal Sweeney really needed - as the Stones midfielder lost his man at a Greenhalgh free-kick and powered home a header.

It led to United’s best spell of the half, with Yemi Odubade denied an equaliser on the line.

The game remained just as open at the start of the second half, Jack Byrne heading just wide for Solihull with Taylor close for Maidstone.

Another mistake did for Stones as Solihull went 4-2 up after 64 minutes, Jack Evans gifting possession on the right with Asante going through to complete his hat-trick.

Greenhalgh’s goalbound effort was blocked by Liam Daly while substitute Nathan Mavila saw a decent hit parried and a penalty appeal for handball waved away.

But Solihull looked just as dangerous going forward and it wouldn’t have been a surprise had they added to their tally.
