Maidstone boss Jay Saunders says Zavon Hines has read too much into his comments.

Hines suggested on Twitter he hadn't been given the credit he deserves after boss Saunders said the forward 'did a job' in his time at the club.

The 29-year-old, who made his Chesterfield debut in a 4-0 defeat at Accrington on Saturday, had previously thanked the club and Stones fans before voicing his surprise at Saunders' words and receiving some lively replies.

Saunders said: "I don’t get caught up in that.

"Like I said, Zav did a job for us, he did well for us, as all the players this year have done well for us.

"I think Zav’s probably read too much into it and had a bite and you can’t have a bite on social media because someone’s always going to come for you and when you’ve got the supporters we have, he’s always going to get a hammering.

"Listen, there’s no hard feelings, we left on good terms and, like I say, he did a job for us and a good job. He’s read too much into it."

Hines scored 10 goals in 25 appearances for the Stones after signing a short-term deal at the Gallagher in August.

Maidstone cancelled the remaining two weeks of his contract so he could join League 2 Chesterfield on Friday.

Saunders said: "I always thought he’d go back to the Football League.

"I’ll be honest with you, and I said that to Zav, I never would have been allowed to get him in at the start of the season when we did if Jamar Loza had been fit.

"The chairman was good enough to go slightly over budget to get him in and that was why we did.

"The deal was always till January.

"I must admit, when he was flying and he got the 10 goals, we tried to sit down and extend it and he wasn’t too keen.

"When his form dropped slightly he then wanted to have a chat and I said, ‘well, let’s hold fire and see what happens’.

"He did well for us in the time he was here, he’s a good lad and he’s got Football League ability and I hope it works out for him."
