Maidstone United 0 FC Halifax Town 0 match report

Lee Worgan’s late penalty save earned a point for Maidstone on the final day of the National League season.

Worgan dived brilliantly to his left to keep out Mike Fondom-Talop’s 87th-minute spot-kick as the Stones drew with FC Halifax.

Maidstone had late chances to pinch the points through Jamar Loza and Tom Wraight but it finished goalless.

There was a real end-of-season feel about the game in a quiet first half.

These final-day fixtures undoubtedly suffer from the early start, particularly when there’s nothing to play for, with the tempo pedestrian and the crowd quiet.

That hadn’t been the case before kick-off with big welcomes reserved for the town’s Commonwealth Games champions, James Hall and Courtney Tulloch, who led the teams out.

On top of that, the club welcomed Maddison Harris, the seven-year-old leukaemia patient who captured the hearts of Stones players this season with her Brave the Shave fundraising efforts.

Halifax had an early chance with Worgan making a comfortable save from Michael Collins’ strike.

United saw plenty of the ball but there was little intent bar a nice move that saw Andre Coker pick up Michael Phillips’ crossfield ball and find Stuart Lewis.

The Stones skipper then stood up a clever ball for Wraight whose decent header was tipped over by Sam Johnson.

Matty Kosylo sent a dipping volley wide at the other end before the highlight for Stones saw Wraight’s terrific 20-yard free-kick kept out by an equally good save from Johnson.

Scott McManus wasted a free header for the Shaymen early in the second half and Ben Tomlinson also fluffed his lines.

Maidstone introduced Jack Paxman before the hour mark and he combined with fellow substitute Loza as Seth Twumasi’s left-foot curler was held.

Paxman also showed nice footwork in the box to create an opening for himself, his effort going out for a corner.

The visitors were awarded a late spot-kick with Josh Hare harshly penalised for a challenge on Kosylo.

Fondop-Talom stepped up but Worgan made a flying save to his left.

United finished with a flourish, Loza’s header parried when inadvertently found by Lewis, then Wraight was denied by Johnson when well placed to score.
