Former Maidenhead United defender Joe Ellul joins Maidstone United

Maidstone United’s second signing of the day hopes to be part of something special.

The signing of central defender Joe Ellul by the Stones comes shortly after they unveiled striker Scott Rendell.

Stones boss Hakan Hayrettin has worked with both players before.

Thirty-one-year-old Ellul has agreed a one year deal at the Gallagher Stadium but hopes to be there longer.

His previous clubs include Maidenhead United, East Thurrock, Billericay, Braintree and a brief stint with New Zealand Premiership side Tasman United.

“I’ve got family who live nearby so was aware of the club and its past,” Ellul said.

“At this stage of my career I really want to put down some roots and be part of building something special. I’ve met some of the people today, seen the setup and this feels so right.”

He was with Maidenhead for the 2019/20 season and Stones chief exec Bill Williams said he was a standout performer.

“He was one of those we really wanted but knew there were clubs higher up who were showing interest,” Williams said.

“To get this one over the line is a mark of this club’s ambition to get back to the National League and I was really impressed with Joe's commitment and eagerness to being part of achieving that.

“We’ve had a good day today with Joe and Scott joining us. Hopefully it’s the start of many good days to come.”
