Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders sees new signing Liam Enver-Marum equalise against Wrexham

Jay Saunders' new signings made an immediate impact in Maidstone’s 2-2 draw with Wrexham.

Striker Liam Enver-Marum scored a late equaliser six minutes after coming on while winger Nathan Mavila looked nice and lively as United pushed for a winner.

Saunders had been looking for a new forward for weeks and in Enver-Marum he may well have found his man.

The former Ebbsfleet player only joined Oxford City from Basingstoke in the summer but with his new club in financial trouble he was allowed to move to the Gallagher.

Saunders said: “He’s a lad I’ve always thought adds something. I’d heard rumours he might be available because Oxford had a few problems down there.

“They’ve been very helpful to be honest, and they said any of the players that wanted to move on could.

“He was someone I thought could do a job for us and add something different.

“I’m pleased for him, he got his goal and I thought he had some good little touches, so all in all it was a decent debut for him.”

Mavila was released by West Ham in the summer and, along with Enver-Marum, appeared in a midweek friendly against Leatherhead.

Saunders said: “I remember him being on loan at Wealdstone last year, he was at West Ham and there’s an agent I know that had got in touch and said he’d left West Ham.

“He played in a friendly for us the other night, he trained with us a couple of weeks before and I just felt he adds something different.

“He can play left-back, left wing, he’s got good pace and he’s got a bit about him. Again, I thought he made a difference when he came on.”

Maidstone played some of their best football since promotion to the National League, leading through Ben Greenhalgh’s free-kick, only for Callum Powell’s double to give Wrexham the advantage.

There were 13 minutes left when Enver-Marum made it 2-2.

Saunders said: “I personally think we deserved to win the game today but there you go, it’s not happened.

“At 2-1 down you take a point but I’m just a little bit disappointed we haven’t taken our chances again and then let in two sloppy ones.

“If you look at the first half I don’t think they’ve had a shot other than the goal. It’s too easy. He’s been allowed to run across our box and get a shot off but other than that I don’t think they’ve had an effort on goal so to come in 1-1 was a bit of a blow.

“We then came out second half and I think that affected us a little bit and then after 10-15 minutes we got going again.

“I thought we were good in possession, I thought we dominated it a lot more than we have done, which was pleasing, but we just gave away another silly goal and then you’re chasing the game.”
