Jay Saunders says Maidstone United wouldn't be in the National League without Jay May

Jay May left Maidstone for Hythe with a glowing tribute from manager Jay Saunders.

Saunders says Stones wouldn’t be in the National League without the big striker, who finished top scorer in back-to-back promotions.

May, 30, was made available last week, with his move to Hythe going through on Wednesday morning.

Saunders said: “Jay’s been outstanding for us. I know he’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I don’t think we’d be in this league without his goals.

“He got 25 the season before last, nearly 20 last season and scored some important goals.

“He was a pleasure to have at the club and I’m sure he’ll do very well for Hythe.

“It’s hard to let him go because you’re all looking for that sort of player.

“I think any manager will tell you, they all want that big man up front.

“In this league a lot of the big men are probably a bit quicker than Jay, no disrespect, but he was great for us and I honestly thought he would play a part this year but things change. I’ve loved having him at the club.”
