MAIDSTONE got three much-needed points after a nervous 2-1 victory over the Ryman League Premier Division's basement side Leyton at Bourne Park on Saturday.

The Stones were by far the better side throughout the 90 minutes but they failed to turn their superiority into goals during the first half when Nick Hegley hit the post and Rob Owen headed narrowly over.

Errison Ahwan had the ball in the net on 48 minutes but the goal was disallowed for offside.

It wasn't until 57 minutes that Maidstone broke the deadlock. An Andy Martin corner was flicked on by Ben Lewis and on loan striker Luis Cumbers steered the ball back past the keeper form a tight angle.

The result looked to be in the bag eight minutes from time when the best move of the game saw Owen and Lewis combined to play in Takaloo who produced a great touch before shooting past the Keeper Jamie Lunan.

But just two minutes later with Leyton's first shot on target they halved the deficit with a clever free-kick from John-Paul Collier setting up a tense final period.

Leyton managed on further shot on goal from Roderick Osei-Owusu, whose effort flashed a yard over, but in the end the Stones were full value for their win.
