Maidstone Weightlifting Club celebrating again after medal haul and new records at National Age Group Championships is followed by successful bid to host 2024 event

Maidstone Weightlifting Club have been successful in their bid to host next year’s National Age Group Championships.

They will be held in Mote Hall at Maidstone Leisure Centre in February.

The news follows an outstanding performance at this year’s championships, held in Leeds, where the club won four gold and three silver medals in the two-day event.

In the under-17 section, Silver Ee won the 67kg weight class, setting three new British youth records, including a 134kg clean and jerk.This lift achieved the landmark double body weight barrier.

Runner-up in the class, also from Maidstone, was Ed Skinner.

Both Ee and Skinner represented Great Britain at this year’s European Youth Championships held in Moldova in August.

Tayla Hounsell successfully defended his British title in the 61kg class.

There were silver medals for Stan McIntyre in the 102kg class with a personal best 200kg total, and Ophelia Harrison in the girls’ 59kg class. Dan Phoenix placed fourth in the 89kg class.

In the girls’ under-20 age group, Ella Beard was national champion in the 81kg class with a 172kg total.

In the development competition, Dylan Botten won gold, achieving successful lifts in all of his attempts.

Club coach Matt Vine said: “I think the success of our youth weightlifters certainly has had an influence in British weightlifting choosing Maidstone for next year’s championships. Everyone at the club is very excited.”
