A serious crash shut the A21 in both directions after a car overturned and ploughed into a lake.

Officers were called after the car left the road and crashed into water beside the dual carriageway, sparking a lengthy recovery operation.

The incident happened at about 3.15pm, and police were joined by ambulance and fire service crews at the scene.

Three fire engines, a technical rescue unit and a water safety unit attended, as well as the air ambulance.

Drivers faced delays of up to 90 minutes during rush-hour, but the road was fully reopened at about 8pm.

National Highways officials thanked drivers for their patience.
