Car fire causes long tailbacks on M2 near Chatham

A car burst into flames after it hit another vehicle on the slip road leaving the M2.

Firefighters were called out to the slip road, at junction three, the Chatham turn-off near the Taddington roundabout, shortly after 6pm yesterday (Wednesday) after the Volkswagen caught alight.

The driver of the vehicle, a man, was able to get out of the car without being injured, but the incident caused long tailbacks for other motorists trying to get off the motorway.

It is believed the Volkswagen may have collided with the back of a Dodge vehicle which was waiting in traffic on the slip road to get off the M2.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The vehicle was well alight when we arrived and has been totally destroyed by the flames.

“After we put them out you could see the front of the vehicle was all staved in.

“We left the scene after about 20 minutes.”
