Dangerous dolls found on sale in Gillingham

An urgent warning has gone out to parents after toxic toys were found on sale in Medway.

Dangerous chemicals that can cause cancer, deformities in unborn babies and infertility in men, have been found in dolls for sale in Gillingham.

The fruit-head dolls were subject to a Europe-wide recall notice in January because they contain a potentially lethal chemical DEHP, which is used to soften plastics.

The shop selling the dolls concerned is subject to an on-going investigation and potentially faces offences under the Toys Safety Regulations, and a fine up to £5,000 and/or a term of imprisonment up to six months.

The toys fail to comply with the regulations on toy safety and do not have the CE marking which appears on products which meet regulations, meaning they cannot legally be sold in the UK.

Cllr Mike O’Brien who is in charge of community safety, said: “These very bright and attractive looking toys cost £10 and may have been purchased for local children. However, they are subject to a Europe-wide recall notice because of the chemicals they contain.

“Obviously we want to keep our young children safe and I would ask anyone who has bought one of these toys to take it away from their child and notify the Trading Standards service.

“Additionally, I would urge any shopkeepers who still have the products in stock to return them to their suppliers, citing the Europe-wide recall notice.”
