All lanes of the M2 were closed while the Kent Air Ambulance landed so doctors could give the injured man immediate treatment.

He was flown to King’s College Hospital, London, suffering from head, chest, abdomen and leg injuries and is still in hospital.

A police spokesman said: “Officers are particularly keen to speak with the occupants of a white Mercedes car that was reported to be in the area at the time as it is believed they may have important information on the incident.”

Any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are asked to call 01634 792209 quoting 10-596.
