Firefighters from Medway and Rochester tackle two fires at former Juddy's Luncheon Club, in Cross Street, Chatham

Arsonists are thought to be responsible for setting fires in a derelict restaurant in Chatham.

Firefighters from Medway and Rochester fire stations were called out the former Juddy’s Luncheon Club building in Cross Street, twice during one shift.

The crews were called out at about 5.30pm yesterday after someone set alight to rubbish inside the building.

Then firefighters were called out at about 6am this morning to the same location, where more rubbish had been set alight inside.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: “We suspect arson and there was a lot of smoke damage, but the building is mostly empty so the fire did not spread."
