The building which was once home to stationary shop Staples has reopened as a popular retailer.

B&M opened its doors in Medway Street on Friday following a full refurbishment.

Mayor David Wildey officially opened the store with the help of store manager David Watts.

Mr Watts said: “The new team have been working really hard to get the store ready for opening day and we can’t wait to welcome the people of Chatham to our store.“

The 70 people employed by the chain were asked to nominate a local charity who would join the Mayor in unveiling the new store.

Megan CIC is a charity that supports people with mental health issues and helps them inot recovery while raising awareness of the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health.

The charity received £250 of B&M vouchers as a thank you for helping with the launch and for all their hard work in the community.

Mr Watts added: “The team from Megan CIC really stood out for us as they go the extra mile for the local community, we wanted to give them some VIP treatment as a thank you for all the hard work they do.

“We hope that our donation can help them to continue the great work they do.”

B&M is one of the UK’s fastest growing retailers and offers a wide range of products including toys, food and drink and pet products.

This is the second store to open in Medway after Strood Retail Park welcomed the store in September.

The Chatham branch of Staples closed in January after it was sold by the US owners to Hilco.
