Bomb disposal called to King Street, Rochester and a person has been arrested by police and remains in custody

Police have made an arrest after the bomb squad were called to Rochester yesterday afternoon following the discovery of a package inside a building.

Officers cordoned off a row of houses and the bomb disposal team was called to King Street after police searched an address there at about 3.25pm.

While inside the house they found what they thought was a suspicious package and called in the explosives experts, who arrived on the scene shortly after 6pm.

Officers evacuated a number of homes along the road near to St Margaret’s at Troy Town Primary School while the package was examined.

The bomb disposal team unloaded their Cutlass robot but it was not used during the operation.

It has not been revealed at this stage what the package was but it was deemed safe at about 7.30pm and the police cordon was removed.

This morning, a spokesman for police said: “As part of an investigation officers searched a property in King Street, Rochester.

“They first arrived at the property at 3.25pm and while the search was taking place a suspect package was found.

“An EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) team from the Ministry of Defence were deployed as a precaution and the package was found to be non-suspicious.

“One person has been arrested and remains in police custody.”
