A2 Sovereign Boulevard eastbound in Gillingham near Bowaters Roundabout shut after vehicle fire

A busy road was shut following a vehicle fire.

Police and fire crews were called to the blaze on the A2, near the Bowaters Roundabout in Gillingham at 11.20am today.

The Sovereign Boulevard eastbound was closed and there was queuing traffic in the area between the A289 Ito Way (Will Adams Roundabout) and A278 Hoath Way (Bowaters Roundabout).

A police spokesman said: "The fire was extinguished and one lane of the eastbound carriageway is closed while the vehicle is recovered."

The vehicle was later recovered and the lane was reopened.

A fire service spokesperson said they were called to a car alight in Watling Street, Gillingham at 11.14am today.

"One fire engine attended and the crew extinguished the fire with a hose reel jet," they said. "There were no reported injuries."

Fire crews left the scene at about 11.34am.
