Several cars damaged in arson attack in The Esplanade in Rochester, police arrest Gillingham man on suspicion of arson

Several cars have been damaged in an arson attack in Rochester overnight.

A police cordon has been set up at an off road car park on The Esplanade, near to Rochester Cruising Club.

At least two vehicles have suffered fire damage, and a Citroën Xsara Picasso has been totally destroyed by the flames.

Police say several cars have been damaged by the flames and officers have arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of arson.

Firefighters and police were called to the scene shortly after 3.30am.

A spokesman for police said: "At 3.38am Kent Police was notified by Kent Fire and Rescue Service that a number of cars had been damaged by fire at a public car park on The Esplanade, Rochester.

"Officers attended and inquiries into the circumstances behind the incident are ongoing.

"A 21-year-old man from Gillingham has been arrested on suspicion of arson and remains in custody."
