Chatham arrest after 'assault' by masked man in Dale Street leaves victim in hospital

A man has been taken to hospital after an alleged assault by a masked man in Chatham.

Police were called to Dale Street to reports of a disturbance and a report a man had been seen wearing a mask last night.

A 27-year-old Chatham man is in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of causing GBH and robbery.

When officers arrived at about 10.30pm, they smelt gas and properties in Dale Street were evacuated as a precaution.

Twitter user @EngieBenjii said: "Apparently someone's been attacked by someone with a mask in Chatham, people been evacuated and road shut off."

EDF was called and people returned to their homes after they had ensured it was safe.

While this was taking place, a man approached officers and said he had been assaulted. He was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital.

Enquires are ongoing and officers are investigating the possibility the smell was from CS gas.
