A man has been remanded into custody after appearing before magistrates charged with causing the death of a teenage Medway student.

Mateusz Makiewicz, 29, is accused of causing the death of 19-year-old April George, who died after a crash on the A2 at Moor Street, in Rainham, on December 7.

Makiewicz, of Canterbury Road, Sittingbourne, is charged with causing death by careless driving and was remanded into custody for 28 days.

April, who was studying criminal justice at the University of Kent's Chatham Maritime Campus, died from her injuries in the early hours of December 8.

Her father Steven, of Lower Halstow, was also injured in the crash, but has now been released from hospital.

Another driver also suffered several injuries.

Tributes have been paid to April, who had a part-time job as a receptionist at Sheerness Dental Centre.

April's family paid their own tribute earlier this week, saying she was a "loved and cherished daughter".

"Although sadly she had only a short life it was a happy and fulfilled one," they said in a statement.

The family added: "April brought sunshine to every day with her bubbly personality, kind heart, beautiful smile and infectious laugh.

"She was an extremely popular and talented girl. April made friends with everybody she met and was an absolute joy to be around.

"April was a loved and cherished daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin and most importantly, the best friend anybody could ever wish for. She will always be in our hearts, missed but never forgotten."

The case was adjourned until January 13, when it is expected to be committed to the crown court.
