Grill fire in Albert Road, Chatham, sparks crews to offer free smoke alarms

Firefighters were called out to a home in Chatham yesterday evening after a fire broke out in the property’s kitchen.

Crews from Chatham and Rochester fire stations called out to a home in Albert Road, at about 9.30pm after a grill caught alight.

The elderly man who lived at the property had been making some toast when his grill caught alight.

The pensioner, who was able to get out of the property unharmed, did not have any spoke alarms fitted in his home.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The fire started in the grill but the flames spread and slightly damaged other parts of the kitchen.

"We fitted smoke alarms at the home for the gentleman and would advise anyone who has not got one fitted to call our number and we will come and fit one for free.”
