Lewis Brooke, 10, from Gillingham, visits Medway Maritime Hospital to hand out presents on Christmas Day to other children

A 10-year-old boy will be handing out, and watching dozens of people open, their Christmas presents without even touching his own.

Lewis Brooke spent last Christmas at Medway Maritime Hospital with leukaemia. After holding fundraisers he now has sacks full of gifts worth around £700 to hand out to other children spending the festive season there this year.

He, along with mum Debbie, will be going to the hospital first thing today to hand out the gifts.

Only after that will they join dad Tom and Lewis’ eight-month-old brother Bobby to see the rest of the family and have their own Christmas later that day.

Debbie, from Gillingham, said: “Lewis really wanted to do this. We were there all over last Christmas and the nurses are amazing – they’re like our family now. They did so much for us and we all wanted to do something to give back, and do something nice for the other children.

“He might have time for one quick present before we go, but that’s about it.”

Lewis, who goes to Balfour Junior School, Chatham, is still having cancer treatment, and will do for at least another two years. He is often in pain, but is on the highest medication allowed to manage it.

Debbie is also appealing for donations to buy some tinned food which will be also be given to the ward.

“The nurses actually buy the tins and I don’t think that’s on. Spaghetti hoops, soup, beans - they aren’t provided by the hospital.”

The family will be continuing to raise money after Christmas in the hope of setting up a charity, Help Lewis Help Others.

The plan is to further aid other people who have been dealt the devastating blow of cancer, and their families. It includes ideas for providing families with opportunities to go away on holiday and spend some much needed quality time together.
