There was also a chance for members to speak to the Golden Girls and grab their signatures, and a quick selfie.

All of the members swarmed the girls as they arrived, armed with pictures of the girls, hockey sticks and hockey balls for them to sign.

Olympic champion Shona McCallin said: “So it’s been just over three weeks since we came back with the gold medal, it’s been a whirlwind, I don’t know where those three weeks have gone.

“It’s all been a bit of a blur, but what a magical blur it has been. If I could have made a wish before the Olympics it would have been to win all eight games and come back with a gold medal and that’s what we did. I still can’t quite believe it.

“It’s great to be back at Holcombe today, who supported my dream to get an Olympic gold medal. I’ve got a lot of people to thank here and its great to see quite a lot of kids getting involved and new kids getting involved after watching us.

“The biggest winner for me is the amount of people that have picked up a hockey stick and really got involved and realised how fun it is.”

The club's chairman, David South, said: "We're extremely excited having the girls back, unfortunately we could only have three out of the four, but Maddie's flown all the way over from Holland especially to come and see us and it means a lot to the club.

"We put on a very big day today with the juniors who are pleased to see them as well, which helps hugely with getting our junior system going.

"The girls, as all players in hockey I think, like to put a lot back into the club and just to show their appreciation for what's happened here.

"We're extremely pleased to see them and wish them well for the next season."
