Inspire Academy rated 'Good' by Ofsted

The first free school in the country to be put in special measures has turned things around.

Inspire Academy, Churchill Avenue, Chatham, was rated inadequate in all areas by Ofsted in January 2016.

Two and a half years later, government inspectors have returned and deemed the school as ‘good’ in all areas.

Head teacher Martyn O’Donnell said: “It was really great for everyone involved, especially for those who have been through special measures and stayed.

“It’s a big deal for the children as well. They can say they are proud to be part of the school now.

“It’s taken more than two years, which is a long time in a child’s education.

“It’s been a process of making people realise what we need to do, what we want and where we were going.

“The quality of teaching has improved massively.

“There was a lot of talk about behaviour and we changed that to academics and getting the kids focused on what they want in life and have something planned for when they leave.

“We focus about being a collective and we are a school, not just a place to come everyday.”

The school was established in 2014 after its predecessor, The Oaks, was shut down by Medway Council. It reopened in 2016 as a free school.

The Ofsted report said leaders at all levels had raised expectations and teaching and pupils’ behaviour had improved, with youngsters thinking of others before themselves.

Inspector Janet Pearce said: “The school is an orderly and structured environment, which supports pupils’ welfare and learning.

“Parents value the difference the school makes to their children. Parents also benefit from the extra care and guidance that they receive from leaders and staff.

“The school is making a positive impact on family life beyond the school gate.

“Members of the advisory board have ensured that the school’s progress out of special measures has been solid and sustainable.”

There are some areas the school still needs to work on including pupils’ enjoyment, reading confidence and absenteeism.
