Independent Police Complaints Commission probe as Chatham woman Lora Snelgrove dies at Medway Maritime Hospital after falling ill in custody

An investigation has been launched after a woman who fell ill in police custody later died.

Lora Snelgrove, from Chatham, had been arrested and taken to Medway police station at 10.35am on Friday, August 22.

The 25-year-old is said to have become unwell, with staff advised by the custody nurse she should be taken to A&E.

Ms Snelgrove was transferred to Medway Maritime Hospital, in Gillingham, at 1pm.

She was was pronounced dead at the hospital four days later on Tuesday August 26.

Now the Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating contact between Kent Police and Ms Snelgrove before her death.

The IPCC is probing the circumstances of the "arrest, transportation and detention" of Ms Snelgrove up to the time that medical staff took over her care.

A spokesman said the investigation is considering the care provided to Ms Snelgrove while she was in police custody, including any risk assessments.

IPCC Commissioner Mary Cunneen said: "Ms Snelgrove's family are obviously very upset by her death, and I have offered my condolences to them.

"Our investigators have made contact with them to explain our role and outline the parameters of our investigation."

A post-mortem examination was inconclusive and the results of further tests are awaited.
