Five more arrests in abuse probe at Medway Secure Training Centre young offenders institute

Police investigating allegations of abuse at a Kent youth jail have today arrested an 11th person.

It comes two days after it was announced that five more people had been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office at the Medway Secure Training Centre, in addition to the five men arrested in January.

A 26 year-old man from Canterbury is currently in custody on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

The investigation was launched after the BBC's Panorama programme sent an undercover reporter into the Rochester site between October and December last year.

The documentary, which was broadcast in January, showed staff appearing to use excessive force on some young inmates.

Following the programme, three men from Medway, aged 25, 34 and 35, were arrested on suspicion of child neglect. A Medway man, 28, was arrested on suspicion of assault, and a 25-year-old East Sussex man was arrested on suspicion of child neglect. They remain on bail.

The five arrested on Wednesday were a 41-year-old woman from Rochester, a 33-year-old man from Rainham, a 25-year-old man from Sittingbourne, and a 24-year-old woman and man, 35, both from Maidstone. They have all been released on bail until mid-July.

Since the allegations came to light, staff have been re-trained and the Ministry of Justice is set to take over the running of the site from private security firm G4S.

Responding to today's developments, regional president for G4S, Peter Neden, said: "From the outset in this investigation, we have given Kent police our full support in pursuing any members of our staff who may have broken the law.

"The behaviour exposed by some members of our staff at the Medway Secure Training Centre in January was completely unacceptable, and as a consequence we immediately dismissed the individuals directly involved.

"Since the allegations came to light, a great deal of time has been focused on understanding how such behaviours came to be condoned in one of our businesses, and Kent police can expect our continued cooperation."
