Response staff from Network Rail were on site and rail operator Southeastern said police “apprehended” a person.

Power had to be switched off shortly before 8pm while they were removed but it was restored within the hour so services could resume.

Trains were delayed for up to 25 minutes, but disruption later eased.

A spokesperson for the police confirmed that officers attended the station yesterday just before 7:45pm, where they assisted the British Transport Police (BTP).

A BTP spokesperson added: “Officers were called to the line near Gillingham railway station at around 7:46pm yesterday following reports of a trespasser on the tracks.

“Officers attended and a person was taken to a place of safety.”
