Ram raiders target Co-op in Delce Road, Rochester

Dramatic footage has emerged of ram raiders smashing a vehicle into a Co-op store, leaving a trail of destruction.

They broke through the double doors of the Co-op convenience store on Delce Road in Rochester, at the junction with Castle Avenue, yesterday morning.

The double doors were smashed, leaving glass and frames strewn across the floor as well as extensive damage near the entrance to the shop.

CCTV footage has since been posted on Facebook showing the moment the raiders struck.

They can be seen using a vehicle to shunt a car parked outside the store forward, before repeatedly ramming the building.

But the raiders left empty-handed at about 3.20am as the cash machine was left slightly damaged but still inside the store.

A police cordon was set up on the pavement outside and and Co-op staff, including managers, were seen standing outside assessing the damage with forensic teams.

Early morning shoppers trying to pick up their morning paper had to go elsewhere when they arrived at the scene and saw the damage.

A vehicle was used to smash into the front of the store and made off from the scene, but police have not revealed what sort of vehicle was used, but say they have not yet made any arrests.

Despite the damage, police said they thought the raiders had left without any cash.

A spokesman for the Co-op said: “I can confirm that a an attempted robbery took place at our Delce Road store in the early hours of April 21.

“The store remains closed and the police are investigating.

“As with any incident such as this, we would appeal for anyone with any information to come forward.”
