Police shut London-bound carriageway after discovery of a hand grenade in Hasted Road, Rochester

An 'unexploded bomb' was found in Rochester this morning.

Police were called to the A289 Hasted Road after a member of the public discovered the device, which is thought to be a hand grenade, at 1.04am.

Officers were joined on the scene at 9am by members of the army's bomb disposal unit, who have now taken the device away.

The London-bound carriageway currently remains closed.

Speaking earlier this morning, a spokesman for Kent Police said: "A member of the public found what they think to be a UXB (unexploded bomb).

"The Army Bomb Disposal Unit is on the scene and the road is closed to allow them to deal with the incident."
