Rochester pupil Raphael Janssens sings to millions

The eyes - and ears - of the world were on 13-year-old Raphael Janssens as he sang at the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup.

The King's Rochester pupil performed the opening solo of the rugby anthem, A World in Union, in front of a packed stadium at Twickenham and to millions of viewers watching across the world, before the tournament began tonight (Friday).

As well as attending Kings, the oldest choir school in the world, Raphael was Deputy Head Chorister at Rochester Cathedral from 2014 to 2015. He's sung at Cathedral services throughout the year, and performed with the choir with The King’s Singers, The Sixteen, English Touring Opera and the James Taylor Quartet.

He's also been a soloist in several performances for the Rochester and Sutton Valence Choral Societies and at the Southbank and has recorded four CDs with the Rochester Cathedral Choir and toured with them across Europe.

Raphael’s father, Stephen, said: "His singing abilities were evident from an early age as he attempted various versions of Mozart arias and Carmina Burana as a toddler. However, his first “major” role was at the age of seven as Joseph in the end of year production by the Maria Montessori School in Exeter. In that same year he also won a soloist cup at the Devon Performing Arts Festival."
