Rainham School for Girls calls off trip to Disneyland Paris over terror concerns following Brussels attacks

Staff at Rainham School for Girls have cancelled a school trip to Paris in the wake of terrorist attacks in the city.

The three-day visit to Disneyland in the French capital planned for next weekend has been called off at the last minute.

Laura Ovenden, the school’s associate head teacher, said they had decided to postpone after closely monitoring the situation. It also comes after bombers target the airport and metro in Brussels 10 days ago killing 35 people and seriously injuring many more.

Mrs Ovenden said: “We have postponed the trip. We carry out risk assessment on all school outings and breaks. We have constantly been gathering information on the situation. We look at all trips verly closely and we decided this was not the right time.”

Parents were informed on Tuesday as pupils returned to the school in Derwent Way from the long Easter weekend. Parents have been fully refunded the £260 cost per child.

It had been described as an “enrichment” visit and an opportunity for the party of 52 youngsters to brush up on language skills.

In November last year, after the attacks on restaurants and a live music venue in Pariss which left at least 129 people dead, Walderslade School for Girls cancelled an excursion.

Sarah Duke, bursar at the school in Bradfields Avenue, said: “We called it off after some parents contacted us to pull children out.”

A spokesman for Medway Council, which runs non-academy schools, said: “We haven’t issued anything to schools against travel to Europe.”
