A thug who brutally punched and kicked his own dad in a drunken attack in his own home has been jailed.

Ben Pannett, 34, admitted causing actual bodily harm to his father when he appeared at Maidstone Crown Court earlier this month.

Pannett, of Cleave Road, Gillingham, was locked up for 22 months after the alcohol-fuelled attack in June this year.

The court heard how Pannett was at home with his parents, his brother and his brother’s girlfriend on the day in question and at about 5pm Pannett and his brother’s girlfriend were heard having an argument upstairs.

He then appeared downstairs bleeding from an injury to his head and after cleaning it, drunk Pannett went into the living room and began punching his brother in the face several times.

Hearing the attack on his son, their dad went into the back garden and dialed 999 and returned to the house where he was approached by Pannett in the dining room.

Pannett then accused his dad of calling police and started to punch his father in the head several times and then began kicking him in the face and body after he had dropped to the floor.

Officers arrived shortly after and were met at the door by Pannett and when he was asked what happened, he said: “It’s a family issue, I battered him.”

His dad was taken to hospital suffering a deep wound to the right side of his head and numerous bruises to his head and body.

Pannett was previously been jailed for 28 days by magistrates in Medway earlier this year, for another attack on his brother.

DC Phil Pead, who investigated the crime, said: “Alcohol played a big part in the events of June 22 in which a father was attacked in his own home by his own son.

“After hearing the unprovoked attack on his other son and fearing further violence from Pannett, the victim did the right thing by calling police.

“What happened after that was truly unbelievable as Pannett set about attacking his father, repeatedly kicking and punching him whilst he was on the floor.

“I’ve no doubt the circumstances of that night will be a difficult one for the family to get over.

“I hope that Pannett will use his time behind bars to reflect on his behaviour and the effect it’s had and will continue to have on his family.”
