University of Kent invites Brexit row MP Heaton-Harris to visit students

The MP at the centre of a row after he asked universities for details of tutors lecturing on Brexit has been invited to talk to Kent students directly.

The University of Kent was responding after the Conservative MP Mr Heaton-Harris wrote to all universities seeking details of courses and the names of lecturers.

A spokesman said: "In the context of his enquiry, we did invite Mr Heaton-Harris to share his perspectives and insights on Brexit with students on our European politics modules. We await his reply."

A Government whip, the MP was forced to backtrack after complaints that he was trying to intimidate universities.

In its statement, the university said: "In response to the request from Chris Heaton-Harris MP, the University informed him of its commitment under its Charter to freedom of speech within the law and to academic freedom, principles that were recently re-affirmed in the 2017 Higher Education and Research Act.

"We also explained that we do not impose any central control on content and that recorded lectures are strictly for the use of students taking the course in question."
