Man released and woman bailed after young girl found alone near Chatham railway station at midnight

A woman has been released on bail after a girl aged around three was found wandering alone near a railway station at midnight.

The 28-year-old had been arrested on suspicion of child neglect, and has been bailed until October 30 for further enquiries.

A man, also 28 and from Chatham, has been released without charge.

It comes after the little girl was found at about midnight near the small roundabout between Railway Street and Ordnance Terrace.

A witness said: "She was tiny, she couldn't have been any more than three years old. She had short blondish hair and was wear pink clothes that looked like pjs.

"A man was holding her in his arms and was on his mobile. My taxi driver said they'd found her on her own near the roundabout and the police were on their way."

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called at 12.11am on Wednesday October 15 to a report of concern for the welfare of a child found in the Railway Street area of Chatham. The child is safe and well."
