Medway's Shaunagh Brown comes off the bench as England beaten by hosts New Zealand in Women's Rugby World Cup final

Shaunagh Brown couldn’t hide her disappointment after England Women’s rugby team suffered World Cup final heartache on Saturday.

Brown, from Gillingham, came off the bench as England lost 34-31 to hosts New Zealand at Eden Park while West Malling’s Rosie Galligan was in the World Cup squad, too, but missed out on a place in the final squad.

On Twitter, 32-year-old Brown wrote: “Gutted! Just gutted.”

New Zealand overturned the Red Roses' lead with a late try to inflict an agonising defeat on England.

Simon Middleton's team managed to lead for most of the final, despite playing with 14 players from the 18th minute after winger Lydia Thompson was sent off for a high tackle on Portia Woodman - but it wasn’t enough for them. Prop Brown came on in the 74th minute for Sarah Bern.

Earlier in the tournament, Galligan, 24, had scored a hat-trick of tries in a 75-0 win over South Africa in a player-of-the-match display while Brown also delivered a try in that match.
