Defensive midfielder Aaron Morris is hoping Tuesday’s disappointing performance proves to be a one off.

The Gills let in two goals early on at Chesterfield and conceded a third late in the game.

He said: “(We are) disappointed. We are frustrated and it was a bad day at the office. They weren’t a bad team but I am lost for words.

“We just weren’t at it. We came away from Bristol City and the game against Doncaster the week before and played really well with good team performances.

“In the first 10-12 minutes (at Chesterfield) we just weren’t at it.

“All we can do is look at ourselves. We didn’t do what the management asked us to do and I would like to think it was just a one off and we go again at the weekend.”

Morris ruled out tiredness as a contributory factor.

“I wouldn’t say that because Chesterfield played Saturday as well,” he said.

“It was a tough game for us at the weekend but we can’t make any excuses, all we can do is look at ourselves and pick ourselves up and go again at the weekend.

“It was a bad result but that’s football and it happens. It is up to us now to show a bit of character and we go again.”

Boss Justin Edinburgh has had little to be mad at since taking over but he let the players know just what he felt about their showing at Chesterfield.

“As you can imagine the manager wasn’t happy,” said Morris, who along with Bradley Dack were the only two that Edinburgh felt emerged with any credit.

“The boys know themselves that it was below par and he told us what he wanted us to do and for the first 5-10 minutes of the second half.

“We had a go but we were too far gone. We were 2-0 down, the game was getting a bit stretched and they were professional. They kept at it and hopefully it was just a bit of a blip.”
