Deadline Day: Former Forest Green Rovers striker Rhys Murphy clinches deal with Gillingham

Gillingham have handed striker Rhys Murphy a deal until the end of the season.

Murphy left Forest Green in early January after agreeing to terminate his deal.

He was handed the chance of a trial at the Gills and has been with the club for several weeks, making an appearance in the recent Kent Senior Cup match at Maidstone.

Murphy scored a goal in that game at Maidstone but the Gills lost 2-1.

Gills boss Steve Lovell said: "I'm delighted to have Rhys on board. He will bring us something different to what we already have.

"He is a clever forward who has a really good eye for goal. I am sure he will be a great asset to us."

The 27-year-old played in Arsenal’s academy, turning professional with them back in 2008. Loan moves to Preston and Brentford was followed by a move to Dutch side Telstar.

He went onto sign permanent deals with Dagenham and Oldham before joining Forest Green in 2016, where he scored seven goals in 17 appearances.

Murphy started this season on loan at Torquay, where he netted once in his eight games with the National League strugglers.
