Gillingham assistant manager David Kerslake says they must improve at the back

Gillingham insist that solving their defensive problems is a priority.

The Gills conceded three in a midweek draw at Chesterfield and only one team in League 1 has let in more goals.

They have conceded 19 in their opening 10 league games and are awaiting their first clean sheet.

It’s a problem assistant boss David Kerslake knows they have to put right and doing that is the priority for the management staff.

Kerslake said: “We don’t want to go through the season conceding the amount that we are.

“To come back from 3-1 and get a point is always fantastic but the manager is deeply disappointed, as we all are, that we have conceded three goals and that needs to be addressed.

“We have to (rectify it) and if we don’t then we’ll flit around and certainly won’t be challenging for anything, so that has to be addressed and it will be a priority.”

There was joy at the final whistle on Tuesday night, with the Gills scoring a last-gasp equaliser to make it 3-3 but Kerslake knows things need to improve.

He said: “We got the point. If we can continue to win our home games and grab a point away, then we will have a good season but we can’t defend the way we did with the goals and crosses.”
