Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh pleased for Rory Donnelly after striker's two-goal display against Fleetwood increases competition for places

Rory Donnelly has fought his way back into the reckoning with a super double for the Gills on Tuesday night.

Boss Justin Edinburgh admitted he had overlooked the Northern Ireland striker in recent weeks but Donnelly ensured he can’t be ignored any longer.

The striker’s second goal was special, chipping the keeper after leaving the Fleetwood defence in his wake

“I am pleased for Rory,” said Edinburgh. “He had to be patient. His second goal is surely a goal-of-the-season contender throughout all the divisions.

“We have got good competition all over the park and none more so than in that top end.
“It is a case of trying to get that right formula and people taking that opportunity – going on a run of performances and goals. Hopefully, that will be the start for him.

“With Cody McDonald coming back to fitness, it was too much of a difficult decision not to put Cody straight back in because we all know what his capabilities are. We don’t hope Cody will score, we know he can.

“Perhaps Rory had been overlooked a bit. The impact he had after coming on at Barnsley made my mind up to give him an opportunity and thankfully he took that.”
