Gillingham head coach Ady Pennock has yet to pick a captain for the new season

No decision has been made on who will captain Gillingham this season.

Lee Martin wore the armband at the weekend, against his former club Ipswich, as the Gills impressed in a 2-1 win.

Martin was again influential, winning the penalty that led to Gills’ opener.

“I haven’t chosen yet,” said head coach Ady Pennock when asked who would be captaining the side.

“I have given it to people who could be possibilities but I want them all to be captains. It is only an armband and I want them all to be leaders.

“I gave it to Lee, he is an ex-Ipswich player and I wanted him to lead the team out.

“We have some good challengers (for being captain) and some are leading by example by the way they play or they lead by being vocal.

“He is up there with a chance of being captain but I haven’t made a decision yet.”

Attacking midfielder Martin has been a standout performer for the Gills so far during pre-season.

He, along with Mark Byrne, former skipper Josh Wright, last year’s captain Max Ehmer, and new signing Gabriel Zakuani have all sported the armband this summer.
