Former Southend and Coventry man Franck Moussa and ex Forest Green striker Rhys Murphy play for Gillingham

Gillingham fielded three trialists against Maidstone United in the Kent Senior Cup.

The Gills were up against the Stones in the quarter-final of the county competition, losing the match 2-1.

Starting for Steve Lovell’s side in the game was experienced midfielder Franck Moussa and former Forest Green Rovers striker Rhys Murphy.

Former Iranian under-21 international midfielder Navid Nasseri, meanwhile, came off the bench. He has previously played for Birmingham and Macclesfield.

All three are currently out of contract.

Moussa has been a free agent since the summer after his release from Walsall.

The Belgian-born midfielder has played for a number of English clubs after first appearing for Southend United as a 16-year-old.

Moussa, now 28 and with a reputation for scoring some spectacular goals, spent two years with Leicester City between 2010 and 2012 and also had spells at Coventry and Charlton before signing for Walsall, after a brief return to Southend.

He played 26 times for Walsall last season, scoring the equalising goal for them at Priestfield - a gift from keeper Jonathan Bond - when the sides shared a 1-1 draw in October 2016.

Murphy left Forest Green earlier this month after agreeing to terminate his deal.

The 27-year-old scored twice on his last competitive visit to Maidstone’s Gallagher Stadium in Forest Green Rovers’ 4-1 win over the Stones at the beginning of last season.

The 6ft 1inch striker played in Arsenal’s academy, turning professional with them back in 2008. Loan moves to Preston and Brentford was followed by a move to Dutch side Telstar.

He went onto sign permanent deals with Dagenham and Oldham before joining Forest Green in 2016, where he scored seven goals in 17 appearances.

Murphy started this season on loan at Torquay, where he netted once in his eight games with the National League strugglers.
