Premier League Watford will host Gillingham in round two of the EFL Cup

Gillingham will travel to Premier League Watford in the second round of the EFL Cup.

Justin Edinburgh’s Gillingham side booked their place in the next round with a 3-1 win at Southend United on Tuesday night.

The two clubs last met in 2007, in the same competition, with Watford winning 3-0.

Manager Justin Edinburgh praised his side’s resilience after overcoming a double injury blow.

Gillingham made it to the second round of the competition last season, losing 2-0 to Birmingham City.

Wednesday night’s draw, which took place much later than scheduled, included all of the top-flight teams that were not involved in European competitions.

Gillingham could have faced the likes of Liverpool or Chelsea but at least bagged themselves a Premier League opponent.

The majority of the second round ties will take place on Tuesday, August 23.
