Beating Walsall was all that mattered for Gills boss Justin Edinburgh and he didn’t care who got the winner.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas struck home late on from a free-kick but Max Ehmer, who was facing the shot, got a slight touch to help wrong-foot keeper Neil Etheridge.

Edinburgh joked: “Max said it definitely touched him but JET is saying it’s already on Sky Sports so it’s done and dusted as far as he is concerned.

“It is irrelevant. It is about the group and making sure there was a response after a black mark was against all of our names on Wednesday (after losing to Brackley in the cup).

“It is not about (who got the winning goal). We have to focus now and get some consistency.

“We have shown that in the league but what wiped a lot of the work out was Wednesday. We move on from that now. I can’t talk about that anymore, it’s held against me, I accept that, but we have to move on and progress in the league.”

Emmanuel-Thomas tweeted afterwards: “lovely to get another goal,” as he took his tally into double figures.

Ehmer had also tweeted, “buzzing to get another goal”, but the big striker has been credited with it by the Press Association and that’s the way it will stay.
