Invicta Dynamos return to NIHL South Division 1 action away at Oxford City Stars before playing Solent Devils in Gillingham on Sunday

Invicta Dynamos return to league action this weekend with the head coach hoping for a January like last year.

The Mos won five of their six league encounters last January and also won a place in the Southern Cup final. They get back on the ice this year bouyed by a terrific end to 2023, with a 13-1 thumping of MK Thunder and a 7-0 win over Oxford City, results that followed up back-to-back wins over league leaders Slough Jets.

Helping the Mos end the year was greater player availability, something that had blighted the team earlier in their campaign. That’s going to be key again as they return to the ice with the head coach seeking greater consistency.

The Dynamos head to Oxford City Stars on Saturday before hosting Solent Devils on Sunday.

Coach Karl Lennon said: “Injuries do affect the team and it effects the morale and it also effects the players who are playing. What was happening was that we were so short – and we had one game where we had 12 players out - we were then taking injuries to the players who were over-playing.

“You would lose one in that weekend because the guy picked up a knock where he couldn’t train that week or couldn’t play the weekend after.

“You would welcome one back but we needed that wave of players to come back and they did against Slough. We managed to get three of four back in the roster and that made a huge difference.

“We had a torrid time with injuries, a lack of games in October also really left us behind on the fixtures and the consistency reflected that and now that we have got a fuller complement of players, now that we have got a regular squad to work with, the performances have been better and that is what we need to maintain now.

“For me, the limits of this team are on themselves, I know what they are capable of, they have shown on many occasions this season what they are capable of, it is just been when we have been short of a body here or there.

“If we can just become a little more consistent now - I think we have got 13 points out of the last 14 available to us and that is really good form and we need to carry that into the new year and into the competitions that we still have left to to play for.”

Lennon hopes they can perform on home ice against Solent, having struggled against them this term.

He said: “We have not played well against them this year, we have had close games, every game has been close, but they have got our number at the moment and annoyingly we had their number last year a bit.

“It is just a matter of focus now on those games coming up and then back to back games against Streatham (on January 13-14) which is a challenge as well too, one in the cup and one in the league.

“It is a busy period in January but January last year was exceptional, we only dropped one point in the whole of January, we are looking to replicate that where we can and keep the train rolling.”

The Mos have confirmed that Tommy Huggett has “decided to step away from the club for the remainder of the season” and thanked him for his contributions and wished him well. He has been struggling before the break with a shoulder injury.
