Gillingham boss Steve Lovell is close to making his first new signings of the summer

Manager Steve Lovell is hoping to add a bit of flair to the Gillingham squad.

He’s already closing in on deals for fresh signings and hopes those new faces will make his side more of an attacking threat next season.

Lovell said: "Hopefully we can get players in that are going to be exciting, want to play football, want to go forward and want to further their careers.

"I am looking at a bit more youthfulness, a little bit more mobility and a little bit more drive going forward from our midfield players. I am very excited by the fact that we can get these players in and show everybody here that we mean business this year."

Negotiations for new players are already well advanced. Lovell is keen to get his squad together quickly.

"I would like to get it done early," the manager said.

"I know what kind of player we want and what kind of player that needs to come in and help us next year.

"They will be athletic and exciting players perhaps coming in and making us a little bit more of a force than we were last year."

Lovell believes his team can succeed in League 1 by playing football that is good on the eye.

He said: "We did play some good stuff for most of the season but there were certain times where we went away from that and that is most probably because of the personnel that we had available at the time.

"You can play your way out of this league, look at Blackburn and Wigan, they are good footballing teams and they have people with flair, people who can pass the ball and move with it.

"Defensively we have done very well this year but going forward we have lacked a bit of flair. If we can bring in a little bit more of that then that will make for a good squad."
