Gillingham captain Lee Martin says Carlisle clash can right the wrongs from Plymouth defeat

Gillingham skipper Lee Martin is pleased they have a chance to quickly rid Saturday’s result from their system.

Martin felt Gillingham deserved something from their league game at Plymouth but they are back in action on Tuesday in an FA Cup replay at Carlisle.

He said: “The boys are massively disappointed because I thought we dominated the game.

“We have played worse in other games and got the three points and I would say, arguably, that was the best we have played technically on the ball.

“To leave without even a point is frustrating.

“We have a long journey (to Carlisle) but it’s a good way to get over something. If you have a bit of a hangover it is better to play Tuesday and get it out of your system.

“Carlisle is a massive game and we know what is awaiting us in the next round (the winner will host Sheffield Wednesday in round three). That is a massive carrot for us.

“We will show Carlisle respect, because they have proven they can mix with League 1 teams (beating Oldham in round one and holding Gills to a draw at Priestfield) but I am very confident we can get a result.”

Gillingham were denied a goal on Saturday after the officials felt Tom Eaves’ early effort hadn’t crossed the line.

But Martin said: “I was probably second closest and it looked in from where I was.

“It is difficult for the referee and lino to see it but it goes down as an unfortunate decision for us. That is football, the old cliché is that we go again, we haven’t time to dwell on it.”

“When you are down there sometimes your luck is out and at the moment it is. It is down to us to keep working hard. The harder you work the luckier you become.”
